COVID-19 Testing Frequently Asked Questions
What are the primary symptoms of COVID-19?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fever
- Chills
- Muscle pain
- Sore throat
- New loss of taste or smell
This list is not all possible symptoms. Other less common symptoms have been reported, including gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
What should I do if I'm experiencing severe symptoms?
If you or a family member are experiencing severe symptoms, please call your doctor. If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911.
When can I be tested?
You will want to test the day before you arrive at camp.
Is the test invasive?
No. We use a nasal swab that must be inserted only about 2 cm into the nostril, until some resistance is met. Then cycle the swab 5 times in a circular motion. Do this again in the other nostril.
Is the test accurate?
In two Community Testing Studies which included individuals with and without COVID-19 symptoms, the Lucira test was compared to the Hologic Panther Fusion, one of the highest sensitivity FDA authorized SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests. Lucira achieved 98% accuracy, 97% positive percent agreement (PPA) and 98% negative percent agreement (NPA)3, excluding samples with very low levels of virus that possibly no longer reflected active infections. Across all data, and including 10 samples with very low viral loads (>37.5Ct), Lucira achieved 96% accuracy, 92% PPA, and 98% NPA3.
